Meet the Team

David Goldberg

Co-founder & CEO

Bio

David is the co-founder and Global CEO of Founders Pledge. He moved into the non-profit sector from an eclectic commercial background. Having run the gauntlet of finance, start-up, and academia, he started Founders Pledge to make it absurdly easy for entrepreneurs to do good in their work and lives. Following high school, David joined Mortgage Capital Associates, one of the largest privately held mortgage banks in the U.S., where he launched the secondary marketing department. After that, he worked as a mortgage and investment banker at CS Financial in Beverly Hills. David also founded and ran a boutique real estate firm in Germany and was the general manager of Urban Motion. David is a graduate of UCLA and the University of Cambridge.

Q&A with David

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

I think I'd enjoy having dinner with Socrates because he's the intellectual backbone of Western philosophy and also asks great questions. Although the case could be made that Plato would be the more interesting person to sit down with. So maybe a toss up.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

It changed a couple of times throughout childhood, but I always harbored a secret desire to play basketball in the NBA. My more practical ideas were dentist, lawyer, and scientist.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Science Fiction would be the genre and Adrian Brody would be the actor.

Charlotte Monico

Chief Operating Officer

Bio

Charlotte brings a wealth of experience to Founders Pledge from working in startups and scale ups as well as in top corporates. She began her career delivering analysis and strategy at Boston Consulting Group, and then went on to lead global teams in both Finance and People Operations at Google. Charlotte played various tactical and operational roles for Cloudreach as it launched and scaled, built her own property side-business, and consults and facilitated for Women Ahead. Charlotte is a graduate of Harvard Business School and the University of Cambridge.

Q&A with Charlotte

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Jeanne Baret because I am passionate about travel and exploring. Jeanne was the first female explorer ever to circumnavigate the Earth. Unfortunately she had to do it in the guise of a man, since the French Navy didn’t allow women on its ships. She for sure has some good stories to tell!

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A show jumper

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Action adventure / romance combo, and I'd flatter myself by being played by Kate Winslet

Carrie Baptist

Chief Experience Officer

Bio

Carrie is a seasoned international development professional, having evaluated, researched and designed high impact aid projects for the last 12+ years. Most recently, she led the Impact and Innovation team at Save the Children UK, where she designed cutting edge education, health and humanitarian programmes which leveraged the unique assets and capabilities of philanthropists and business to achieve exceptional impact. Previously, she evaluated the effectiveness of a billion pound portfolio of aid projects for the UK government, and worked at a grassroots level with SPARC, a large Indian NGOs focused on amplifying the voice of the urban poor in urban development. She is a graduate of the London School of Economics and the University of British Columbia.

Q&A with Carrie

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Virginia Woolf, for her incisive opinions as well as for some Bloomsbury Set gossip.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A bird!

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Slacker comedy, in the style of Richard Linklater, but with Charlize Theron or Uma Thurman (as I'm quite tall)

Neil Jansen

Chief Information Officer

Bio

Neil joined Founders Pledge in October 2015 from both technical and artistic careers. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and then moved to Los Angeles to work on the Space Shuttle Main Engine as a systems engineer. As NASA wrapped up the shuttle program, he successfully transitioned into a career as a freelance brass musician - teaching and performing across the greater Los Angeles area. Founders Pledge brought him to London in 2017 to support the team from the global HQ.

Q&A with Neil

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Robyn. Must include an evening out afterward. Her choice of venue(s). She's idiosyncratic. I like this.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Astronaut. Possibly some sort of robot. Space robot. Robonaut. Interstellar Exploratory Being.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Science Fiction. Visually, my character would be artificially generated based on an average of what people would expect me to look like given where I am psychologically at each point in my life. They'd match each version to the voice of the actor that is the closest visual match to that version, and then generate the lines artifically based on recordings of that actor.

Niki Buys

Chief of Staff

Bio

Niki joined Founders Pledge in September 2018. Following a foundation course at drama school in Oxford, Niki spent eight years as a Stage and Production Manager on over 50 different productions. The adventure took Niki from pub theatres to the Edinburgh Festival, the London West End, the Royal Albert Hall, and a very big tent in Saudi Arabia.

Before joining FP, Niki worked at the Royal Horticultural Society as part of the Operations team for their flower shows. She worked across their portfolio of five major events including the Chelsea Flower Show.

Despite this, she is still incapable of keeping her house plants alive.

Q&A with Niki

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Tyrion Lannister. I'd love to pick his brains on strategy and battle plans over a glass of wine.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A horse. I was very definite about this.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The film would fall somewhere between a drama and a complete farce.

Matt Hurst-Smith

Director of Operations

Bio

Matt joined Founders Pledge in early 2019 as People Director. Taking an untraditional route to People Operations, Matt started his career with Deloitte before moving into the Visual Effects industry, where he focused on building exceptional employee experiences, and then moved into the startup world. He strongly believes in the power of HR to unlock teams' potential and help great work happen.

Outside of work, Matt is a huge rugby fan and plays regularly (though isn't as fast as he used to be), an avid golfer and a musician. He also loves a good dad joke.

Q&A with Matt

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Derren Brown - I realise that by the end of the meal I will either be hypnotised or he will have stolen all of my possessions, but I reckon it would be worth it.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A musician. Or failing that, a Power Ranger.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

It would be a hybrid of musical, comedy and boring documentary. Probably starring Mark Ruffalo.

Crystal Chiu

Head of Community

Bio

After graduating with a BSc Geography from UCL, Crystal started her career in climate change research across Northern Scandinavia. She then spent three years in the city recruiting quant analysts in the finance world. Having reached her savings goals, she moved onto a publishing house in Athens as an editor and writer of children’s books.

It wasn’t until her return from Mediterranean shores that she found her mojo in major gift fundraising joining Christian Aid, Teach First and RNIB (Royal National Institute of Blind People), where she was Head of Major Giving. It was at these incredible charities that she spent almost six years building close and fruitful relationships with HNI’s from across a range of sectors including finance and technology.

After completing a start-up programme, Crystal started a side hustle focussed on dating, as well as setting up a charity that supports young mothers in Sierra Leone.

Crystal has also worked as a silver service waitress at Tottenham’s stadium (don't tell Meera or Sach!), and the first match she ever saw was Arsenal at the Emirates stadium.

Q&A with Crystal

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

David Attenborough - because I can't think of anyone who has done more for raising awareness of nature's treasures and threats with the average person than our Dave! Besides, who could be better to compile your dream travel bucket list with?!

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An 'explorer', which probably explains my dinner guest choice!

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Has to be a romantic comedy (oh the long quest for love!) starring Nora Lum as me.

Ariane Bouché

Beethoven Gerber

Community, US

Bio

Based in San Francisco, Beethoven joined the Community team at Founders Pledge in December 2021. She came to the team with a dynamic background across the social impact sector. Prior to joining FP, Beethoven worked in health center operations at Planned Parenthood. This nonprofit role inspired her interest in supporting private-social sector collaboration to solve the world's most pressing problems. Beethoven grew up in the SF Bay Area and attended UC Berkeley, where she earned a B.S. in Society & Environment with a focus on Global Public Health. In her free time, she can be found downhill skiing, running, yoga-ing, or drinking yet another oat milk latte.

Q&A with Beethoven

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

The absolutely incredible Belgian psychotherapist, Esther Perel. She holds such a wealth of knowledge related to what is at the core of our lives - relationships. I deeply admire her ability to articulate meaning about our relational selves in the most candid and thoughtful ways. I would love to sit down with her and talk for hours!

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A pop star. This dream still reveals itself whenever a Taylor Swift song comes on.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Definitely a Hallmark-style, holiday-themed romantic comedy (the best kind of movie). I'd love to be played by Zooey Deschanel.

Nakita Naik

Community

Q&A with Nakita

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A famous artist gallivanting the world for inspiration!

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

I would love to be in a romantic comedy with comedic icon Mindy Kaling as the lead.

Ed Mason

Our family cat, Moggy. It came as a blow when I found out this wasn't going to pan out.

A wing walker - my dad and brother were both pilots.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

I love Tina Fey and would be honored if she played me in whatever genre best blends her self-deprecating humor on 30 Rock with the lasting friendships and 90s nostalgia in her show Girls5eva.

Emily Hoble

Growth - UK & EU

Bio

After studying International Relations in Exeter and Shanghai, Emily began her career working for international development nonprofits in Ghana and Bangladesh. Emily went on to work for London & Partners, the Mayor of London’s economic development agency, initially as a foreign direct investment specialist and latterly as Head of Corporate Engagement. Having experience in the public, private and nonprofit sectors prompted Emily to think about how these sectors can best collaborate to solve the world's biggest problems. To truly understand the different theories and models for combining profit and purpose, Emily completed an Executive MSc in Social Business and Entrepreneurship at the London School of Economics in 2020/21. This course led her to the work of Founders Pledge, and she joined as a Growth Lead in early 2022.

Outside of work, you’ll find Emily wild swimming, rollerblading, indulging in guilty pleasure musical theatre, and travelling as much as possible.

Q&A with Emily

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

I’ve always been fascinated by the Tudors, so I’d love to meet Elizabeth I. She was a real female powerhouse, and probably has some good gossip to share too!

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An eclectic mix of professions, from detective, to pub landlord, to lawyer, to Tudor. However, a theme of altruistic careers runs through my family, so I think I always knew I’d end up wanting to make the world a better place.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

An adventure film all about a young woman who travels around Asia on her own, and the weird and wonderful people she meets on the way. I’d be played by someone very British - perhaps Claire Foy or Emily Blunt.

Lauren Gourhan

Bio

After spending over a decade in the non-profit sector, Lauren joined Founders Pledge in early 2022 as a Growth Lead covering the US. With roots based in traditional nonprofits such as The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and March of Dimes, Lauren has been recognized as a leader and innovator to the traditional philanthropic process after graduating from San Francisco State University with a degree in Sociology and Political Science. Taking a holistic approach to the fundraising experience, Lauren is passionate about building lasting donor relationships.

Hands down, Michelle Obama - love how she owns her story and also her successes.

For many years, I wanted to wholeheartedly be a pediatrician. It wasn't until I took organic chemistry that I started to second guess this.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

There is no doubt that it would be a Rom Comedy and I would love to be played by Maya Rudolph.

Erin Arnold

Growth

Bio

After graduating with degrees in Music Education (bassoon) and Theater performance, Erin Arnold started her career in Arts Administration and Music Business Management at Manhattan School of Music and RZO, LLC. At RZO, she worked with celebrity bands and musicians as well as their charitable foundations. From there she transitioned into startups and tech, supporting executives at Etsy and one of the founders of Blue Apron.

Outside of the office, Erin can still play all orchestral instruments up to a 6th grade level (some better than others). She’s written, directed and produced off- and off-off Broadway plays, and her voice can be heard in radio ads and video games, most recently the NHTSA/Ad Council campaign against Buzzed Driving. She lives in the NYC suburbs with her husband and their Chow Chow, Ted.

Q&A with Erin

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

My ideal dinner party guests would be Oprah because I find her to be wise and inspiring (and I've had a subscription to "O" Magazine since way before it was cool--ok, it's still not cool, but I love her) and David Sedaris, because his stories entertain me endlessly.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A professional cheerleader or a singer, but ideally a singing cheerleader. (It should be noted that though I do sing, I never actually became a cheerleader at any level. I just really enjoyed pom-poms.)

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

My life would be best represented as a mockumentary, but with a narrator a la Ron Howard in Arrested Development, so that when I say something like "This will work out perfectly!" he'll interject with "It did not work out perfectly". Either Amy Adams or Isla Fisher would play me, as I demand a fellow ginger.

An emergency room doctor, and I still do!

Nerdy answer but probably WD Hamilton, who was a brilliant theoretical evolutionary biologist (‘The Selfish Gene’ by Richard Dawkins popularised his ideas). He was also an interesting character by all accounts; his obituary reads ‘he lived for ideas, was especially partial to unpopular ideas, and thought little of his own safety’.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

A tragic comedy played by a young David Mitchell, in full Peep Show style

Luisa Sandkühler

Research

Bio

Luisa joined Founders Pledge as a Research Assistant in March 2021. She focuses on the climate work at Founders Pledge.

She has previously lived for half a year each in Colombia and India. Now she is studying physics at the Humboldt University of Berlin.

She has been involved in the climate space for the last eight years and has been working with different youth organisations, politicians and decision-makers. She is part of the effective altruism community.

If she is not working she is probably dancing around in her room.

Q&A with Luisa

I would choose Richard Feynman because he was a fascinating physicist. I would love to speak with him about his life, research and ask him all my physics questions.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A soccer player or an author of adventure stories. I really enjoyed writing and telling stories to my family when I was a child. I also rewrote the end of books where the main characters died or that I didn't like for another reason and wrote a happy end.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

Adventure-love story and I would be played by the actress that played Hannah Abbott. I don't really watch movies but as a child I always wanted to be Hannah Abbott from Hufflepuff in Harry Potter.

Q&A with Violet

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

William Nordhaus. I'd like to know more about how he sees the role of models like DICE in addressing climate change. I'd also have some technical questions for him. Actually, maybe we should just plan a work meeting, not a dinner...

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

David Attenborough, or a ballerina.

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

A coming of age story where the protagonist moves from the US to Switzerland, with comedic elements arising from her intolerance of cold and poor command of Swiss German.

Q&A with Casey

Q: If you could choose anyone famous (real or fictional) to have dinner with who would they be and why?

Famous in local philanthropy circles, I'd have dinner with my late mentor and my daugther's namesake, Leigh Stilwell. I'd ask her all my burning questions, say all the things I never got to say, and thank her for all she gave to me and to the world.

Q: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a lawyer and then a judge. My father says as a child, I was always sought after to settle schoolyard squabbles!

Q: If a movie was made of your life what genre would it be, who would play you?

A romantic comedy, played by Blake Lively. But I'd be too busy raising children and trolling my husband, Ryan Reynolds, on Instagram to make a movie. It would likely have to be a documentary... or cautionary tale!

It would be a comedy where none of jokes are funny, starring Mary Louise Streep - people say she is a good actor.

Her covid-style weekend routine is usually focused on her well being and home based fitness training and occasional long walks, otherwise it would be travelling.

I love true story movies because you learn about real stuff from real people's experiences. The best actress to play me would be Danai Jekesa Gurira, the Zimbabwean-American actress, who has featured in a number of films such as the Black Panther.
